CLAYMINTON® 81 additive is an efficient replacement for conventional organoclay additives (in coatings containing aliphatic solvents (mineral spirits, VM&P naphtha, etc.) trade sales paints, wood stains, varnishes, light industrial finishes, traffic paints, industrial maintenance paints and marine coatings. When non-aliphatic solvents are present, the effectiveness and ease of dispersion of CLAYMINTON® 81 additive depends upon
the system, and must be evaluated. Do not post add to systems containing primarily aromatic solvents.
CLAYMINTON® 81 rheological additive is a system, rather than a solvent thickener and is not suitable for lubricating greases and similar binder-free products.
• Easy to use
• Eliminates pre-gels
• Eliminates need for polar activators
• Simplifies paint making
• Disperses fully under low shear conditions
• Full and consistent development of rheological additive efficiency
• Can be added at any point in the manufacturing process
• Decent sag and settling resistance at a lower viscosity than organic rheology modifiers

CLAYMINTON® 81 additive increases flexibility in paint manufacturing, since incorporation at any point in the manufacturing process is possible. This rheological additive can be incorporated in the dispersion phase under high shear and in the letdown tank under low shear. A polar additive is not required.
CLAYMINTON® 81 additive can be incorporated in the letdown under mixing conditions. Some minimal shear is required. The paint must have good movement in the letdown tank as CLAYMINTON® 81 additive is sifted in. The time required for dispersion will depend upon the size and configuration of the tank, the type and speed of agitator and the viscosity and solids of the system. For best dispersion of CLAYMINTON® 81 added under letdown conditions, turbulent mixing is suggested. Turbulent mixing in the tank aids breaking up macro agglomerates, permitting full dispersion. Turbulence can be developed by setting the mixing blade off center or baffling the tank.
As with conventional organoclays, CLAYMINTON® 81 additive does not disperse efficiently in cold systems. The best performance under letdown conditions is achieved when the system temperature is between 24°C and 35°C (75°F and 95°F). When used in the pigment grind, it is not sensitive to high temperatures and no minimum temperature is required.
There is generally no need to pre-gel CLAYMINTON® 81 additive. However, if desired, CLAYMINTON® 81 can be used as a pre-gel - note that at equal organoclay solids a CLAYMINTON® 81 additive pre-gel will be thinner than a pre-gel of a conventional organoclay. The full efficiency of CLAYMINTON® 81 additive is developed once the pre-gel is added to the paint system.
Use levels are typically 0.2-2.0% by weight of the system, with the level dependent upon the degree of thickening, control of sag and pigment settling desired. When evaluating CLAYMINTON® 81 additive as a replacement for conventional organoclays now used in the 0.2-2.0% range, a good starting point is equal weight replacement, but CLAYMINTON® 81 additive may still be the most cost-effective thickener. When replacing conventional organoclays which are being used at a level above 1.0% by weight, a higher level of CLAYMINTON® 81 additive may be required to match rheological properties.
