Product Description

Product Description

CLAYMINTON® 82
Super Dispersible Organoclay for moderate to high polarity solvent and liquid system
Rheological Additive
The super dispersibility of CLAYMINTON 82 rheological additive greatly simplifies the formulation and manufacture of paints, adhesives and sealants containing moderate to high polarity solvents, such as ketones, esters, glycol ethers and ether esters and alcohols. The use of CLAYMINTON 82 offers the manufacturer an opportunity to increase productivity, cut energy and material costs, as well as simplifying the manufacture and post correction processes - all while maintaining the high products quality obtained with conventional organoclay rheological additives.
CLAYMINTON 82 additive is an effective replacement of fumed silica and polyamide wax for thixotropy with lower viscosity but better anti-settling and anti-sagging performance, especially in high solid system.
Applications

CLAYMINTON 82 additive is an efficient replacement of fumed silica in systems containing moderate to highly polar solvents (Ketones, esters, ether esters and alcohols). This includes polar systems containing some aromatic solvents. CLAYMINTON 82 may be used in:
• Industrial finishes
• Automotive finishes
• Core washes/foundry paints
• Marine paints
• Adhesives and sealants
• Autobody space fillers
• Maintenance coatings
When replacing fumed silica in high or 100% solids systems, evaluate CLAYMINTON 82 both with and without a polar activator.

Product Advantage

• Easy to use
• No need to pre-gel
• No need for polar activator
• Lower package viscosity but higher performance of anti-sagging and anti-settling
• Consistent development of rheology, improving batch to batch production consistency
• Can be used to post correct
• Improves manufacturing efficiency
• Enables faster throughput.
• High efficiency
• Cost effective

Incorporation

The easy and dependable dispersibility of CLAYMINTON 82 additive permits its additive at any point in the manufacturing process. This rheological additive can be incorporated in the dispersion phase under high shear and in the letdown tank under lower shear. Neither a polar activator or a pre-gel is required.

Use in the Grind

CLAYMINTON 82 may be incorporated anywhere during or after the pigment grind. Prewetting or pre-dispersion is not necessary. Minimum activation temperature is not required.

Use in the Letdown

When CLAYMINTON 82 is used in the letdown, it should be sifted in and good turbulent mixing conditions provided. For best performance in the letdown, the system should be between 24°C-32°C (75°F-90°F). If letdown temperatures are too high, CLAYMINTON 82 additive may still be used either, a) by pulling out part of the batch and adding the CLAYMINTON 82 on a high-speed disperser or b) prewetting the CLAYMINTON 82 powder with solvent. The prewet powder may then be added to the hot letdown and mixed in.

Levels of use

The level of CLAYMINTON 82additive to be used in a specific system depends on the degree of thickening, sag control and pigment setting desired. Use levels are typically 0.2-2.0% by weight of the entire formula. When formulating with CLAYMINTON 82, a good starting point is replacement of the currently used organoclay or fumed silica at an equal weight, then optimizing. Less CLAYMINTON 82 additive may be required because the full inherent efficiency can be obtained, even under lower shear, plant conditions. In many systems, at higher thickener concentration levels, Super dispersible CLAYMINTON 82 additive is more efficient than traditional organoclay or fumed silica.
