Incorporation of CLAYMINTON 90 in organic systems requires high-shear dispersion equipment. Addition of CLAYMINTON 90 as a dry powder for in-situ dispersion. The CLAYMINTON 90 powder is added directly to the resin/solvent blend and is thoroughly mixed for 5 minutes. The pigments and fillers are than added and dispersed with high shear for at least 16 minutes. If a chemical activator is used, it should be added to the mill-base after dispersant and other additives.
CLAYMINTON® 90 additive can be incorporated in the letdown under mixing conditions. Some minimal shear is required. The paint must have good movement in the letdown tank as CLAYMINTON® 90 additive is sifted in. The time required for dispersion will depend upon the size and configuration of the tank, the type and speed of agitator and the viscosity and solids of the system. For best dispersion of CLAYMINTON® 90 added under letdown conditions, turbulent mixing is suggested. Turbulent mixing in the tank aids breaking up macro agglomerates, permitting full dispersion. Turbulence can be developed by setting the mixing blade off center or baffling the tank.
As with conventional organoclays, CLAYMINTON® 90 additive does not disperse efficiently in cold systems. The best performance under letdown conditions is achieved when the system temperature is between 24°C and 35°C (75°F and 95°F). When used in the pigment grind, it is not sensitive to high temperatures and no minimum temperature is required.
There is generally no need to pre-gel CLAYMINTON® 90 additive. However, if desired, CLAYMINTON® 90can be used as a pre-gel - note that at equal organoclay solids a CLAYMINTON® 90 additive pre-gel will be thinner than a pre-gel of a conventional organoclay. The full efficiency of CLAYMINTON® 90 additive is developed once the pre-gel is added to the paint system.
The quantity of CLAYMINTON 90 to use depends on the system in question. Typical levels are between 0.4% and 2% dry CLAYMINTON 90 based on total system weight.
